concept & heroic metaphor

Sabbar (Arabic for "cactus") is a podcast initiative launched by a media group to platform the lived experiences and narratives of former political detainees from the Syrian Assad regime. The core design challenge was honoring the podcast's name while strictly avoiding a literal or cliché depiction of a cactus tree. The creative breakthrough reframes the former detainees as courageous survivors—unsung heroes. The iconic posture of a hero flexing their arms mirrors the tri-branched structure of a saguaro cactus, forming an abstract symbol of strength, resilience, and endurance.

final mark & typography

The finalized emblem abstracts the cactus-hero motif into three vertical, segmented columns. Composed of modular, rounded audio equalizer bars, the mark bridges the physical concept of resilience with the digital medium of podcasting and voice work. Flanking the emblem, clean Arabic typography completes the balanced horizontal lockup: صَبّار (Sabbar): Anchors the left side in bold, customized Arabic script with traditional diacritics. بودكاست (Podcast): Balances the right side in matching rounded letterforms.

The color system draws directly from desert landscapes and flora, combining organic earth tones with warm focal accents: Olive & Forest Greens: Represent natural endurance, the cactus organism, growth, and survival under harsh conditions. Warm Terracotta Orange: Adds human warmth, vitality, and an energetic contrast to highlight primary media touchpoints and digital audio waveforms.

logo motion & audio frequency reveal

The motion design for the Sabbar Podcast transforms the static emblem into a living display of sound and voice. Driven by the core concept of sound waves, the animation highlights the transition from spoken survivor narratives into a lasting symbol of resilience. The sequence begins with the individual segmented bars animating like an active audio equalizer, bouncing dynamically to simulate voice frequencies and sound wave levels. As the audio rhythm settles, the modular green and terracotta bars expand and align into their fixed vertical positions—forming the three distinct columns of the cactus-hero motif. Finally, the custom Arabic typography glides in from the sides to complete the lockup, merging the power of oral storytelling with modern podcast identity.
