Twenty years ago, I decided to become a graphic designer, focusing on creating visual identities, building websites, designing books, and more.
The first logo I ever designed was back in 1992. I was 16 and the logo was for a commercial office in Damascus. I sketched it out on a piece of paper with a pencil, then took it to the print shop to be used on the office’s official letterhead. At the time, I didn’t know yet it was called a logo; I thought of it as ‚a way of writing the company’s name which can be used forever‘.
The early days of my career were challenging, and sometimes even strange. I remember I had to pay the client for the first poster I designed, rather than being paid for it. Furthermore, for my first paid logo design job, I was compensated in two jars of honey!
Along the way, there were some important milestones; the first days of failure and loss, the first job as a graphic designer and travelling to Germany to complete my Master’s degree in Media and Communications, then the decision to learn programming and incorporate it into my design work instead of suffering from coding, having founded the company ‚reelink media‚ with my friend Dellair Youssef, who also took my photo on this page, and, of course, having created my own website in its early stages – this very website; the first that I had built from scratch in terms of both design and programming.
Effective design is invisible. It’s all about blending artistry and functionality to create something that simply works. Along my journey, I have developed a solid understanding of the various theories and principles of brand, book and front-end design. Owing that to a keen eye for detail, deep appreciation of cohesion, and a knack for layout, I strive to to create captivating artwork every day that effectively communicates a brand’s message and engages its target audience.
Twenty years on, I am still passionate about creating ‚invisible design‘ that translate ideas into tangible outcomes. Whether timeless or trendy, in terms of appearance or function, I enjoy developing solutions that yield striking results, leaving a lasting impact.
